WHAT
WE DO

From innovative vaka voyages embracing eco-conscious travel to coral reef preservation endeavors and community outreach programs

PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.

The Uto ni Yalo Trust is dedicated to preserving Pacific traditional voyaging techniques. We are on a mission to reconnect with the wisdom of our ancestors and safeguard the future of our planet. By bridging ancient wisdom with modern technology, our flagship vessel, the Uto ni Yalo, has voyaged over 80,000 nautical miles, advocating for sustainable practices and inspiring global commitments to protect our oceans.

Our values drive us to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, promote traditional knowledge, empower youth, and ensure sustainable sea transport.

Ocean Tail Experience

In close collaboration with Talanoa Treks, we are working to develop Fiji’s first-ever integrated ocean trail, showcasing Fiji’s breathtaking marine ecosystem, traditional sailing solutions, and the rich connection Fiji communities have with the ocean. The project will connect sustainable tourism operators with environmental groups to establish a sustainable Ocean Trail.

The project hopes to work with the Duavata Sustainable Tourism Collective, which has developed a network of 15 small to medium operators that share common values of working with resource owners to manage their vanua (land) and qoliqoli (inshore waters) through genuine and respectful partnerships. Talanoa Treks and the Uto ni Yalo Trust will connect these sustainable tourism operators.

Glass Crushing Project

Our Environmental and Ocean Stewardship programs were greatly boosted in 2022 when the New Zealand High Commission in Suva facilitated the procurement of a glass bottle crusher to bolster our waste management program.

The glass bottle crusher kindly housed on the Pacific Conference of Churches premises, is operated by UNYT volunteers and youth partners from the Duavata Conservation Leadership Program with the resulting sand from the crushed bottles used in our various programs.

Canoe Building Project

Established through a collaborative effort with the University of the South Pacific, the Canoe Building Project embarked on a mission to empower communities. Ten druas were meticulously crafted and distributed to communities, accompanied by comprehensive training for 25 members in the art of building and navigating these eco-friendly vessels.

Supported by the Pacific – European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) Programme, generously funded by the European Union and the Government of Sweden, this initiative champions sustainable management and robust ocean governance. It addresses critical issues such as food security, economic growth, climate change resilience, and marine biodiversity conservation. Join us in shaping a future where tradition meets innovation, and where the seas become pathways to prosperity and sustainability.

Traditional Sailing and Environmental Stewardship (TSES) Program

Established in 2021, the Traditional Sailing and Environmental Stewardship (TSESS) program stands at the unique intersection of traditional sailing and environmental stewardship. Our TSES programs aim not only to revitalize traditional sailing and navigational skills among youth but also to fulfil the legacy of Mama Uto, one of the pillars on which UNYT was founded. Mama Uto serves as a platform to promote sustainable transport and ocean conservation.

Here, tradition seamlessly meets environmental consciousness. Through hands-on experiences and immersive learning, TSES is dedicated to fostering a new generation of ocean and environmental stewards who understand the critical importance of preserving and defending our oceans.
